    Helping Hand’s Mission Statement

Helping Hand is a mission of CHPC. It offers food assistance to those in need in the community. The pantry is made possible by financial and food donations from the congregation, several local churches and charitable organizations, and the Hunger Ministries Program of the Presbytery of Detroit.

Since 1989, the food pantry has served an increasing number of families every year and remains committed to addressing food insecurity in southeast Michigan, where as many as 1 in 7 households struggle to put food on the table.

    • The Helping Hand Food Pantry is open on the first and third Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon*.
    • The pantry is open to anyone requesting assistance, regardless of zip code. No financial information or identification is required.
    • Only one person per household (per address) is eligible to apply for assistance for the family. Eligible participants can receive food from the pantry once per month**.
    • No appointment or pre-registration is required.
    • Our pantry provides only prepacked bags of shelf-stable food items.
    • We do not offer fresh or refrigerated items.
    • We do not provide emergency food assistance, clothing, cash, gift or gas cards, delivery service, or any other type of gifts.

*may be closed due to bad weather, or a church event; it’s best to call ahead

**subject to change depending on food supply

How and what CAN you donate to our food pantry:

The Helping Hand Food Pantry accepts dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Any food that is “shelf-stable” or nonperishable. And remember, only donate food that hasn’t reached its “sell-by, best-by or expiration” date.

What food NOT to donate to our food pantry:

The number one rule to remember is this: if your donation is perishable, i.e., it’s something with a limited shelf life if not refrigerated, we cannot accept it. Additionally, there are other categories of food that we cannot accept. We've broken it all down into this handy list: items needing refrigeration, fresh produce, leftovers, expired food, baked goods, and any food with packaging concerns.
